Markham Maes, the shittiest of kittens, never ceases to amaes. Markham is a rare creature, and an artist in the purest sense. In a time where computers and all things digital prevail, Markham sticks to pencils, pens, paints, paper, canvas and sometimes wood. He’s been know to work on paintings in his car while stopped at traffic lights. Sure, we scan his work once in a while or digitally manipulate it for various commercial appliques, but when it comes to his real artwork - that shit is analog - all day long. And yeah, lots of artists still work almost entirely old school with little to no reliance on the computer, but Markham takes it to the extreme. Can you name the last person you know who hand-drew screen printed and hand-painted their announcements for their latest show, themselves? I can, it’s Markham Maes and he’s a gem of creative talent. Haha, you totally need to shack up with ‘em - you totally seem to have a crush!

Hand-painting screens is actually way easy - just get some drawing liquid and pencil in your design on the screen and fill it in! When it’s dry, wipe some screen filler on everything, dry that and wash all the blue gunk off.

Hand printing post cards is fun! You can sign/number/date them and give them to pretty girls you like.

I must be naive about how illustration works these days - is pencils and pens so passe as to be forgotten?

With the economy in shambles and the media preaching fear like it’s their job, shit’s gettin’ crazy. One thing to be on the lookout for this holiday season… clients. They come wearing many disguises, talking big game, and spewing all sorts of… well, often just spewing. So, here’s a little tip to all the idependent professional creatives out there, when they(clients) feel compelled to tell you just how deep their pockets are - odds are they’ve got short arms. That’s it. Deep Pockets - Short Arms. Heard that one from a buddy the other day, and it couldn’t be more dead-on. Take it or leave it. Just be on the lookout for anything remotely resembling a baby seal wearing high-end denim. It’s probably not what it seems.
