OCTOPUS THEMED SKATE BOWL

By: Juan Alberto De la Roca

octopus_skate_bowl

This is a pool that was painted by an art collective called Nevercrew. They, and the pool, are in Lugano, Switzerland…More can be found on their blog.

All the Denver wanna be graffiti artists who keep tagging the 20th street park need to pay attention. If your going to spray, please do a better job. Most of the stuff you see these days is pretty weak…

Alvin Gregorio LIVE! on The Untitled Art Show

By: Todd Berger

My partners and I consider ourselves lucky to call Alvin Gregorio a friend. He’s a multi-talented and special man. Husband, Father, teacher, friend, and artist, are some of the titles which could be used to describe Alvin. However, none alone, nor even the collective group really do Alvin justice. He’s one of those unique individuals where the whole is truly much greater than the sum of its parts. And, tonight you can gain a sense of what I mean. Alvin will be engaging in some candid artist-driven dialogue this evening at 8pm – live via podcast on The Untitled Art Show.  It’s Untitled Art Show episode #44 and sure to be a stand out.  Alvin’s next exhibition is on the 20th of November at Vertigo Art Space.

A LOGO IS NOT A BRAND

By: Todd Berger

When considering a logo, soon to be or existing, it must be understood that a logo is not a brand. A logo is just a mark or symbol, be it iconic or typographic or a combination of the both that is created with the intent of representing or embodying an ideology or a set of principles larger than the sum of its inherent parts.

A logo, poorly or well-executed can come to stand for a great many things. All of these seemingly embedded definitions or characteristics lie far beyond the logo’s built-in aesthetic nature. For a logo to take on such layered meaning it must be supported by ideas, actions, outputs and ultimately human beings.  It’s at this juncture that logo and brand intersect.

A brand, in time, can come to define a logo. And, human beings, in time, can come to define a brand. A logo on its own can not define a brand. A logo can represent or identify a brand, but not define one.    It’s the thoughts, actions, and output of the human beings behind a brand and thereby behind a logo that come to define a brand and ultimately imbue a logo with meaning and value.

NOTE: In the future, robots, and cyborgs, and other forms of artificial intelligence may come to define a brand, but those days are still a distant reality.  In the past, half-humans like Dick Cheney have attempted to define a brand, but have failed.

MODERN BUSINESS MACHINES FOR WRITING, DUPLICATING, & RECORDING (1947)

By: Juan Alberto De la Roca

Yes…I did actually watch this whole thing. A little over 16 min long.

The best part is that the underlying message is the same today as then, except now we have smartphones, social media, and augmented reality. Substitute these old school devices with Twitter, iphone apps, YouTube, and etc., the idea work is still being revolutionized. Still, cool to look back on the tools of yesteryear thought….Stella is one mean typist!

“An intriguing historical film, demonstrating many expensive business machines found in modern offices of the era, including electromatic and Chinese typewriters and machines for filming, stenciling, folding and lithographing. Among the machines shown are Diebold’s Flofilm microfiche recorder, the Fileomatic Desk, the Pierce Electronic Wire Recorder, the Soundscriber with plastic disk, the Elliott Stencil Machine with Graphotype machine, the Davidson Duplicator for litho printing, the Davidson Folder for letters, the Varityper, the Autotypist Perforator, the IBM Chinese character typewriter, and speed typist Stella Pajunas, using an IBM Model A Electric Typewriter, who set a one-hour typing speed record in 1946 of 140 net five-stroke words per minute.” – Via Archive.org

Charge. A Bicycle Company.

By: Todd Berger

chargeBikes

Our friend Mike Moore stopped by tonight.  I haven’t seen him in a while.  He noticed the 2010 HelloTurbo color palette and we got to talking about bikes… He took me to the Charge Bikes website.  He’d mentioned the company and their vibe a while back, and I’ve been meaning to take a gander ever since.  Wow.  What a fresh bike company – such good energy.  They’ve got a killer team, they’re kicking out some really radical projects, and their lineup of complete bikes, frames, and accessories is pretty stellar.  Check out the squad, and watch some vids, particularly Fixed 3.  It’s hot.  We get a little nasty here and there off-roading it up on our track bikes, but Charge team rider Tom La Marche – he’s a ripper.  I’m stoked and can’t wait to dig deeper into the site with my partners in the morning.  Hopefully the Charge site has the same effect on you.
