WILL THE REAL McCAIN PLEASE STAND UP?

Occasionally we’re misquoted, or say things we haven’t completely thought through. John McCain takes this notion to a whole new level. Real trustworthy, right? Seems like he’s really got a handle on the economy and international affairs…  A+ to Brave New Films for some serious guerilla steez.

OIL INFLATION: The Rising Price of Everything

With the price of crude oil on the rise and gasoline surging past $4 per gallon this spring, consumers(you and I) are, or at least should be wondering what’s next.  The price of gasoline however, is but one of a number of every day petroleum-based products, ranging from asphalt to diapers to plastic water bottles (yeah, the ones you’ve been buying your “special” water in after being tricked into believing that the water in your tap isn’t safe, or perhaps better yet, because you “know” it isn’t from Fiji) that are on the rise.  Here’s a current snapshot of the price of 9 of the most commonly used petroleum-based products now, and the percentage of increase since last year.

1.) JET FUEL: $4.09 per gallon - up 72%

2.) INDUSTRIAL LUBRICANT: $5.82 per gallon - up 99%

3.) ASPHALT: $495 per short ton - up 55%

4.) PLASTIC BAGS: 2¢ per bag - up 5.6%

5.) DEODERANTS: $3.27 per unit - up 4.1%

6.) TOILET SEATS: $35 per seat - up 40%

7.) SHAMPOO: $3.70 - up 3%

8.) DIAPERS: $12.79 - up 6.7%

9.) PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES: 18¢ per bottle - up 7.6%

NOTE: The prices displayed are based on data provided via Business Week and range from May to July of 2008.

VW 1-LITER

In the spirit of our recent “green” blog activity I thought I would chip in.  I stumbled upon this over at TreeHugger.com and thought it was pretty awesome.  I can’t believe they’re actually going to make this thing, if you’re at all familiar with the auto industry rarely is a concept car brought to market without severe modifications (usually ruining the entire “concept”).  I’m curious about the tech specs like how fast it will go and all that, but regardless, big ups to VW. Check it out:

“The 1-Liter car has been around in prototype form since 2002 and greens everywhere have been drooling at its 282 miles per gallon fuel economy (or 1 liter of gasoline per 100 kilometers, hence the name). VW has finally decided to make more and sell them, and a limited edition (estimated in the thousands) should start selling in 2010.”

PLASTIC BAGS = OIL DEPENDENCY

My brilliant and talented friend, Regan sent THIS to me and a number of other folks this morning.  Please CHECK IT OUT(just scroll through the slides after the jump).  I think it’s safe to say that most of us realize that plastic bags are an oil-based product.  If we’re to cut our dependency on oil, both foreign and abroad, we’re certainly going to have to cut our dependency on plastic bags.  And, it’s kind of an easy thing to do - a number of foreign nations are leading the way.  I wish the same went for smoking…  Thanks Ray!!!

SOMETHING TO CONSIDER….FOOD.

With the G-8 conference in full swing, oil on the rise and global climate change on everyone’s radar, I thought it’d be nice to shift focus on this glorious monday morning. How about the topic of food? The world’s leaders are discussing it as we speak, it’s getting more expensive by the day, and I am enjoying a bit of it as I type. A few great images here from our friends at TIME magazine to put some things in perspective. Not good, not bad….just something to look at. Make your own judgment, and think on it a while. We (as a nation) may not be the best or the worst…but don’t take what you have for granted.

FIXIE’S TO LEFAVORS…

Yep.  We’re doin’ it.  SBD and I.  Ridin’ fixed gears to Lefavor’s to celebrate our independence - from oil, or something like that…  This may be my last blog post.  So, Happy 4th!!!  If we make it… we’ll be meetin’ up with Alex and Mr. Shaeffer and takin’ in 7 cities worth of fireworks from Scot’s roooftop deck, Hopefully… droppin’ in on DJ Z Trip, hittin’ up Shitty’s show at The Shoppe, poppin’ in on Andenken, kickin’ Saturday at the “Super Fresh Block Party” - and gettin’ all arty with Lefavor and friends. Independence Day… hmm…

AMERICA WENT TO WAR NEARLY FIVE YEARS AGO AFTER AN ORCHESTRATED CAMPAIGN OF FALSE STATEMENTS BY THE NATION’S TOP OFFICIALS, A WAR BEGUN UNDER THE ILLUSION OF AN IMMINENT NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT. WE ARE HAUNTED BY A WAR BEGUN, IN OTHER WORDS, UNDER FALSE PRETENSES.” - DANIEL BOORSTIN, THE IMAGE (1961)
