cypher13 x AIGA (Re)DesignAwards

By: Todd Berger

Sustainability is a concept we’re very concerned with and heavily vested in at cypher13.  As designers we have an immense responsibility to create and help shape a more sustainable culture.   We take that responsibility quite seriously. Subsequently, we’re extra stoked to have been asked by the AIGA to design and produce the awards for the 2009 (Re)DesignAwards competition.  For those of you not in the know, the (Re)DesignAwards is a national design competition honoring sustainable and socially responsible work. Learn more here.  The submission deadline is July, 31.

A WARNING TO CREATIVES

By: Josh Holland

I just read something of a horror story for any designer or artist-type. Designer Jon Engle is being sued by a stock art company for use of his own imagery. Apparently someone ripped off his work and sold it to a stock company, now they’re suing him for the arbitrary sum of $18,000.00. To make matters worse, they’ve hired a law firm specializing in copyright infringement, and are contacting his clients in some kind of effort to slander his name and business. Granted, I don’t know Jon outside of this story, but a simple glance at his level of design work compared to that of the stock firm in question is telling. Read all about it HERE.

This seems like a great opportunity to inform young artists and designers, NEVER work with these companies. Selling your work to a stock art company may seem like a quick way to make a buck, but trust me, you only help to devalue the blood, sweat and tears of other artists in the process. I see too many people out there that have no idea what a creative’s time is worth, and even more uneducated artists out there to oblige them. A deep understanding of artist’s rights and responsibilities are absolutely essential to being a professional creative, so if you’re foggy on these subjects please educate yourself. Some good places to start:

AIGA NY

By: Lifter Baron

After cruising the interwebs day in and out, I’ve come across an array of well designed sites and smartly executed functional approaches to apps and web tools. But of all of those I’ve seen, the ones that get me excited all over again are those that seem to effortlessly accomplish both an aesthetic challenge and the functional needs of the site all at once. In that short list of sites, I would have to say that the AIGA, of all people, rarely meet that expectation. Well, this is an exception to that statement. The AIGA NY chapter seems to have raised the bar on my expectations, at least within the AIGA spectrum of things.

Although the AIGA NY site fits within the rigid standards and provides nearly identical content as some of the other AIGA sites, it provides a much more comprehensive sense of information available through its sexy grid based design and tidy little description buckets scattered throughout. It also uses a minimal color pallet to highlight the important bits of information and call out sections of relevance. The type choice is perfectly legible and exemplifies everything one should hope for in a site that caters to designers and artists alike. On top of the aesthetics, the site utilizes the ever so important RSS feed as a way to collect desired content on the fly.

After working with the AIGA MN chapter on a web project of similar scope (this project won’t go live until sometime in the spring of 09), it’s hard to not notice something so wonderfully executed. It actually makes me sort of jealous, which in all honesty, makes me cringe when thinking about anything AIGA. BUT, as it seems there is not only hope for something with such a stained reputation as the AIGA, but other sites that face similar challenges and obstacles. If anything, this should be noted as an excellent source of information and inspiration as well, to designers and other AIGA chapters. Take notes.

c13 for bordo bello

By: Todd Berger

cypher13 is wrapping up a series of 9 custom laser-etched skate decks for an upcoming exhibition in Denver. The exhibition, entitled Bordo Bello is a component of the AIGA’s mentorship program run by Matt Bargell and will be held on December 12th (boards go on display Dec. 5th) at the Access Gallery.   Italian for “Beautiful Board,” Bordo Bello is a mentorship-based design initiative where students and graphic design professionals team up to design the underside surface of a skateboard deck to create a unique visual statement.  This project marks our second of many to come collabs with our bro Kurt Barbee of 5280 lasers and our first formal partnership with the AIGA.  Pics of all 9 completed decks coming soon…  And, oh other featured designer/artists include David Carson of David Carson Design and Mike Strassburger of Modern Dog.

DESIGN JAM 08

By: Lifter Baron

Slowly but surely the Denver / Boulder design scene is inching its way towards new and exciting levels, not only in the talent department but in involvement as well. Here in the next couple weeks the local AIGA is host to a live design challenge event that highlights local designers at their best. How the challenge works is 3 contestants will be chosen to take a station and will find a design related problem to solve. The challenges are limited to 15min each and solutions will be unique to each designer. Their every move will be watched on large format projection screens and be judged in multiple categories by 3 separate judges. Then, the top scored designers will be invited to a final showdown in hopes to win some amazing grand prize. The event is called Design Jam and will be held at Denver’s Plus Gallery on 24th & Lawrence. Included in the soirée will be music and drinks too… Cost for entry is $5 AIGA members (RSVP) and $20 non-members(RSVP), student non-member $15, student member no cost. Mark the 16th in your calenders and be ready to get nasty from 6-10pm. If it makes you feel any more interested I, Lifter Baron will most definitely be there for autographs and small talk… Oh and I’m one of the 3 judges! So get your asses down and get involved. See AIGA link for more details.
