WHITE SPACE 2008

By: Todd Berger

DWR’s White Space, benefitting the Boulder Museum of Contemporary art, featuring Alex Henry, Laura Moretz, Scot Lefavor, Melanie Yazzie, Alvin Gregorio and Julia Lunk provided for a super arty and entertaining evening.  A big thanks goes out to Ryan Batch for pulling the event together and in tip-top form.  All of the participating artists kicked out great pieces of work in roughly two and a half hours, barring Lefavor of course, who was only about an hour late (not that Scot’s famous timing hindered his work…).  The silent auction raised a solid chunk of loot for the museum and six people went home with nice new pieces.  While I’m biased and love most anything my design/business partner, Alex and pals Scot and Alvin produce I gotta say Mr. Gregorio took the cake on this one.  When it comes to producing live art, preparation is king.  Have a look.

ALVIN GREGORIO x SOFT&FURRY™

By: Todd Berger

Typical.  Alvin Gregorio produced another beautiful, timely and insightful piece of art.  This go round it his canvas was GROOND, realized as Filipino Warrior King Lapu-Lapu.  Alvin is calling his toy design, “lapu-lapu awaits magellan.”

Here’s what Alvin had to say about his recent work, “Filipino Warrior King Lapu-Lapu, on April 27th of the year 1521, killed the pirate Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan. Lapu-Lapu is known as the Philippines’ first National Hero. For me, he is a symbol for the fight against “big business”, which at that time was known as colonialism-in the name of religion. More simply, he is a symbol i use for keeping life close to the root. Word!”

Perfect.

ALVIN GREGORIO in JAKARTA

By: Todd Berger

One of our favorite locally based international art world talents, Alvin Gregorio is working on a new body of work for his upcoming show at Ark Galerie in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.  Alvin pulled in our mututal friend, sAne (Adrien Robert) to collaborate on a number of pieces.  Adrien’s roots, on his Mom’s side are Indonesian and Alvin figured it was about time to expose sAne’s work to his mother’s native lands.  Frikin’ love it.  We can’t wait to see the full body of work.  Hopefully we’ll be droppin’ more on Alvin’s latest project soon!!!

BON VOAGE by Alvin Gregorio - MISSING!

By: JoyEngine

Yesterday we alerted our friends to another art theft within our community (following the theft of one of Shannon Bonatakis’s pieces right off one of our walls) , two of Alvin Gregorio’s and Rachel Pontious’s panels from their mural entitled “Bon Voyage.” Here’s a pic of the mural in all its glory. The 2 missing panels are those on the far right. Once again, if you have any information regarding the whereabouts of Alvin and Rachels art please call 303.492.5029 or email alvin.gregorio@colorado.edu. And, oh, please try not to steal any fucking art today. We know it’s hard. Just attempt to restrain yourself.

ALVIN GREGORIO AT THE PETER BLAKE GALLERY IN LB, CA

By: JoyEngine

If you don’t know (or haven’t heard) of Alvin Gregorio, you probably should. He’s a super talented artist, all-around great guy, and an incredible mentor….I’ve worked closely with him on pushing my own art and I don’t think I’d be where I am today artistically without him. So I happened to be visiting Newport Beach last weekend, and Alvin coincidentally was having an opening down in Laguna Beach at the Peter Blake Gallery. I knew he had been working hard all summer (and longer) on a new body of work and wow, it was amazing. He has a super fresh, unique style unlike any other I’ve seen, in which he synthesizes acrylics, aerosol, and crayons and works with some pretty dope characters (his newest addition: owls). Here’s a little taste of the show and his work…so awesome that he had a opening at a gallery of that caliber. Congrats Alvin!

“THIS IS HOW WE ROLL” AT INSTALLATION SHOE GALLERY

By: JoyEngine

Our good buddies down the street at Installation Shoe Gallery threw a big art bash/fundraiser this last friday. All the proceeds went to benefit Jeremiah Brooks, a fellow skateboarder who was in a super bad car accident.

“A tumble down a ten-stair rail, or a flail into the flat of an empty pool - these were the types of situations most likely to put Jeremiah “Jam” Brooks in the hospital. But that’s not what laid the thirty-year-old Boulder skateboarder low. No, if Brooks could have foreseen the event that would nearly kill him, maybe he wouldn’t have agreed to the fall road trip to New Mexico. He wouldn’t have jumped out of the van near Larkspur to piss along a dark stretch of I-25. Certainly, he would’ve been on the lookout for the Jeep heading south at 65 mph. Because then he could have avoided being in the air, in intensive care, in a wheelchair, in surgery and insured for nothing.” - Jared Jacang Maher

A slew of local artists came out with custom grip tape, Vans high-tops and hats. Our little posse received 12 pieces of grip tape and one hat. We thoroughly fumigated the Engine with spray paint on Friday and finished just in time. The other pieces are from the likes of Todd Bratrvo, Dennis McNett, Matt “Putrio” Carr, Hoshi Ludwig, Dave Soderberg, Shange Rymer, Alvin A. Gregario, Vincent Comaretto, Brian Ball, Chris “PeeWee” Levy, Nick Motte, Louis M. Schmiett, The Yummies and a few big hitters, Jeremy FIsh and Lance Mountain. All the shoes are up on ebay for bidding - again, all the money goes to help out Jeremiah. The party was a blast and the art was rad. If you’re in Boulder and didn’t make it to the opening, get your ass down there.
