WHAT IS ART?

KAIKAI KIKI GOING TO L.A.

By: Josh Holland

Tokyo art superhero Takashi Murakami will be opening an animation studio in L.A. under the existing umbrella of Kaikai Kiki. Their first project will be a feature length animated film based on an earlier short. It will feature the adventures of Kaikai and Kiki, as they space travel and learn to grow watermelons with poop.

“Animation and film have always been among my greatest influences, ever since I first saw ‘Star Wars’ and Hayao Miyazaki’s films,” Murakami said in a statement. “This studio represents a great step in the evolution of Kaikai Kiki and gives me a closer proximity to the community of artists with whom I hope to collaborate as I continue my explorations of animated and live-action film.”

I can’t freaking wait! Here’s a taste:

ANDREW STANTON INTERVIEW

By: Josh Holland

Co-writer and director of some of Pixar’s best flicks, Andrew Stanton, was interviewed today on Fresh Air about his newest film endeavor, Wall-E.  The in-depth interview is fantastic, and touched on everything I really wanted to know about including color, design, squares vs. circles, storytelling without dialogue or facial features, and the film’s timely social commentary.

This interview is a window into the creative process of an extremely talented artist, and I’d highly recommend it to artists of all types as well as fans of the movie.  And if you haven’t seen it yet, what the hell are you waiting for?
