ANDREW BAJADALI – MY BRO – CHAMPION!

By: Lucian Foehr

We’re, well, I’m – takin’ a brief reprieve from our run of the mill art and design banter and givin’ BIG props to a few of our homies. A couple of us over here at the Engine are pretty big bike geeks. Well, Lucian “Small BUT Dangerous” Foehr is probably the biggest, but I’ve got some cycing history and a soft spot for the sport myself. This weekend was the 2007 Redlands Bicycle Classic, held in Redlands, California, the biggest cycling event running this time of year on domestic soil. Andrew Bajadali of Boulder won the overall. Alex Candelario, currently residing in Reno, Nevada, Andy’s teammate, long time training partner, and one of Andy’s closest friends, put in 4 days of tremendous efforts to help deliver Andy the victory. Finishing 2nd was another close friend of ours (Lucian’s house mate when he’s not crashin’ at my pad), Phil Zajicek.

For starters, Congrats “Baj”, “AC” and Phil. You guys are fuckin’ gladiators. I have the utmost respect for what you do on the road. It’s down right nasty and I know a little bit about how much it hurts. Now, the emotional part. Andy “the BAJ” Bajadali and Alex Candelario are two of my oldest and most highly respected friends. I trained with these guys while chasing my cycling dreams day in – day out for a number of years (while Phil is a good friend, a great guy, and an amazing athlete, I just haven’t it laid it down on the road with him like I have with the BAJ and AC). I have to admit that when I got the call from AC just after the race I was pretty damn choked up, to the point of having to hold back some tears. You see Andy and the Baj are tight, like brothers, they’ve been in the trenches together and a victory like this, well, it means a lot. It’s the realization of lots of years of hard work, sacrifice and belief, belief in on another as peers, athletes, and friends.

Bike racing is tough. There’s no room for pussies. It takes more dedication, committment, faith, and confidence than any other endeavor I’ve ever undertaken. The moment’s of glory are fleeting, they fade fast. But, when you’re in the midst of one of those the moments, they’re just that, glorious. I tip my hat to my homies, the “Baj”, AC, and Phil for a job well done. Way to represent.

Now, Baj, let’s drink some fuckin’ beers – you pussy. I know you’re home, I saw Phil this morning and he said he saw your meticuously anal, skinny little bike racin’ ass in Whole Foods. Oh, I’m flipping you off in my head right now and I can see your response. Pussy. AC, I will sincerely be making the effort to blast out to Reno and kick it with ya at your new pad. I need some Alex time. Word up.
