LUCONG - NEW WORK. NEW SITE.
09.26.08
Lucong, if you’re not familiar, is a Denver based Contemporary American Portrait Artist. And a damn good one. Originally from Shanghai, China, Lucong immigrated to the US in 1989. His seemingly culturally void socialist utopia was replaced by mid-western Iowa and his youthful days in America were spent drawing and honing his vivid imagination. Upon graduating from the University of Iowa in 2000, Lucong moved to Denver and tuaght himself to paint in oils in an effort to postpone attending medical school. Painting was a natural fit and In 2002 Lucong earned wide praise for his painting, “Self Portrait as a Martyr.” In 2005 he made SW Art Magazine’s annual list of twenty one artists to watch under the age of 31. By 2008 he was named one of five “Today’s Masters Making Their Marks” by Fine Art Connoisseur magazine.
Lucong currently lives and paints in Denver with his wife Laura. In Denver his work can be found at Gallery 1261 on 1261 Delaware. I find both his story and his work utterly compelling. Colorado should be proud to have him.
