FLAKE.tv is a small collection of videos broadcasting some of the hottest stores, fashions, etc in the world. Definitely check out the flick of Colette, they are reopening later this month so it’ll be interesting to see how they step their game up. FLAKE.tv also has plans to include videos of creatives in all fields in the future, which is definitely something to look forward to. Anyway, peep the videos, get jealous and then realize that you own/do most of these things anyway.
My friend Mike Moore heads up tres birds workshop, a Boulder based architecture and design firm. Mike and his team are perpetually pushing the boundaries of design both conceptually and structurally (guess that’s why we haven’t found time to hang recently…). Few US-based boutique firms exisit within any creative field that are as committed, conscious, seasoned and forward-thinking as tres birds. Earning every right to work with clients like Burton (designing Jon Damiano’s first of its kind retail showroom in Denver leading to the eventual design of Burton’s flagship stores in Osaka, Los Angeles, Irvine, Oakland Chicago, and Vail) and CP+B (designing and building out some of the best features in their Boulder location) certainly wasn’t easy, but Mike and his crew made it happen - the way it should happen - through belief, committment, raw talent, some serious skills, and a little help from their friends.
Mike and his radical thinking are major sources of inspiration to the three of us at our little creative firm. But, at days end… It’s the small things, like receiving videos like the one below (tres birds shot the below video while working on the Freehill studio and garage) that reaffirm that inspirational pole position and load it up with some bonus credibility.
We consider ourselves lucky that we’ve been super busy, that we get to have our friends art adorning the walls of our gallery, shop, studio (and not necessarily in that order) and that day by day more and more people are opening up, becoming receptive, and really feeling what we’re(everyone included - you know who you are) doing with JoyEngine and our design firm, cypher13. We’d like to take a minute and thank everyone that’s contributed both big and small to the enjoyment reaped ,particularly by those of us working out of 2037 13th Street. We love our jobs, The latest incarnation of JoyEngine.com has been a blast, and we’re proud of the contributions (however small they are) we’ve collectively made to our greater Colorado art & design scene. Cheers… to progress.
A few months ago I was thinking about the sad, painful death of album artwork. The digital download is becoming the standard in the world of music, and with that, the loss of amazing album art is soon to follow. I decided to talk to some of the design studios working primarily in the music field about their thoughts on the fact. Check out the first interview with Invisible Creature conducted for Indie HQ. Check the interview here.
Slowly but surely the Denver / Boulder design scene is inching its way towards new and exciting levels, not only in the talent department but in involvement as well. Here in the next couple weeks the local AIGA is host to a live design challenge event that highlights local designers at their best. How the challenge works is 3 contestants will be chosen to take a station and will find a design related problem to solve. The challenges are limited to 15min each and solutions will be unique to each designer. Their every move will be watched on large format projection screens and be judged in multiple categories by 3 separate judges. Then, the top scored designers will be invited to a final showdown in hopes to win some amazing grand prize. The event is called Design Jam and will be held at Denver’s Plus Gallery on 24th & Lawrence. Included in the soirée will be music and drinks too… Cost for entry is $5 AIGA members (RSVP) and $20 non-members(RSVP), student non-member $15, student member no cost. Mark the 16th in your calenders and be ready to get nasty from 6-10pm. If it makes you feel any more interested I, Lifter Baron will most definitely be there for autographs and small talk… Oh and I’m one of the 3 judges! So get your asses down and get involved. See AIGA link for more details.
