NATURAL DESIGN

By: Juan Alberto De la Roca

Today was the day where Watson and Crick announced that they had determined the double-helix structure of DNA, the molecule containing human genes.

Indeed, design is inherent in all things…

21+

By: mmm

tres birds workshop has designed and engineered a building for you.  The 21+ is a modular structure that is available for purchase through tres birds workshop design/build.
-the intention of this structure is to provide an inexpensive dwelling/work space for North Americans.
-the structure’s materiality and energy engineering result in a space that makes more energy then it consumes.
-the unique structural engineering of the building allows for varied placement conditions; it may be settled onto cleared land, atop an existing building, connected to an abandoned foundation, intergrated into urban voids.
-the structure is modular in both construction and deconstruction, allowing this building to become a temporary dwelling in a location to be developed in the future.
-all building materials are American made.
materials:
-beetle kill lodge pole pine wood (main frames, interior)
-structurally integrated panels (exterior structural wall system)
-galv-alum t-panels (exterior cladding, roof)
-low-e insulated glazing
energy engineering:
-each proposed site will be analyzed for sun / weather conditions and the 21+ window apertures will be adjusted for peak annual heating and cooling loads for that particular region.
-roof mounted photovoltaic panel array will provide 120% of annual electric energy consumption of the 21+.   excess energy can then be used for electric car recharge, carbon offset credit, or cash back from regional energy provider..
-thermal infiltration is limited by the 10inch foam exterior walls and the siting/architecture.
-heating is provided by in floor radiant panels.
-cooling is provided through evaporative cooling system.
costs:
$140k  with no future energy bills

SECOND SATURDAY ON EAST COLFAX

By: Josh Wills

This Saturday is shaping up to be one for the books. Tons of goodness happening around town, so get out early and start making rounds. Personally I’m super stoked on the line-up that we’ve put together along the sunny and vibrant corridor of East Colfax. Scot Lefavor shows us all how to improve our lives ten fold, in his solo show Products For A Better Living at The Fabric Lab. Snowblinded (Anthony Cozzi) will be burning retnas & birthing pure light, with his first solo show Snow & Light at The Shoppe. And last but not least Plastic Chapel channels the power of time and space in the second opening of the Square Footage show.

VICE : THE ______ ISSUE

By: Josh Wills

For the next three months, Vice is giving you the chance to write your very own mini version of the magazine. You come up with your own DOs and DON’Ts, you write your own features and columns, you smush the whole thing together under a theme of your choosing.

The issues you create will be judged according to excellence, with the least terrible winning a grand prize of $1,000 or an internship at the magazine. Runners up will get something slightly less cool than the lucky bastard that wins.

Go here to sign up or to check out more info. The whole deal is called The ____ Issue… you come up with your own title for the issue and put it in the _____.

News from Tokyo of a couple no-logo McDonald’s opening up early this month. No clowns, no golden arches, no…anything, just a black storefront with red trim and a burger in the window. The menu’s exactly two items long: quarter-pounder and double quarter-pounder. Check the new website here.

GREG ABBOTT MADE ME LOOK TWICE

By: JoyEngine

I had the great opportunity a few days ago of making the acquaintance of a cool designer/illustrator from the UK by the name of Greg Abbott. Greg’s work is fabulous!!!! It is clean, structured, maintained, and most of all witty. For a young designer/illustrator (I will not post his age, for fear of belittling even myself) he has alot of talent. Check out his work, it is fresh……. not fresh like my breath in the morning, but fresh like in something to admire and look forward to seeing more of.

Greg is working on a site (aren’t we all) but for now you can check out some of his work at:

FLAKE.tv

By: Celeste Prevost

FLAKE.tv is a small collection of videos broadcasting some of the hottest stores, fashions, etc in the world. Definitely check out the flick of Colette, they are reopening later this month so it’ll be interesting to see how they step their game up. FLAKE.tv also has plans to include videos of creatives in all fields in the future, which is definitely something to look forward to. Anyway, peep the videos, get jealous and then realize that you own/do most of these things anyway.

TRES BIRDS WORKSHOP – FREEHILL STUDIO

By: Todd Berger

My friend Mike Moore heads up tres birds workshop, a Boulder based architecture and design firm.  Mike and his team are perpetually pushing the boundaries of design both conceptually and structurally (guess that’s why we haven’t found time to hang recently…).  Few US-based boutique firms exisit within any creative field that are as committed, conscious, seasoned and forward-thinking as tres birds.  Earning every right to work with clients like Burton (designing Jon Damiano’s first of its kind retail showroom in Denver leading to the eventual design of Burton’s flagship stores in Osaka, Los Angeles, Irvine, Oakland Chicago, and Vail) and CP+B (designing and building out some of the best features in their Boulder location) certainly wasn’t easy, but Mike and his crew made it happen – the way it should happen – through belief, committment, raw talent, some serious skills, and a little help from their friends.

Mike and his radical thinking are major sources of inspiration to the three of us at our little creative firm.  But, at days end… It’s the small things, like receiving videos like the one below (tres birds shot the below video while working on the Freehill studio and garage) that reaffirm that inspirational pole position and load it up with some bonus credibility.
