We consider ourselves lucky that we’ve been super busy, that we get to have our friends art adorning the walls of our gallery, shop, studio (and not necessarily in that order) and that day by day more and more people are opening up, becoming receptive, and really feeling what we’re(everyone included – you know who you are) doing with JoyEngine and our design firm, cypher13. We’d like to take a minute and thank everyone that’s contributed both big and small to the enjoyment reaped ,particularly by those of us working out of 2037 13th Street. We love our jobs, The latest incarnation of JoyEngine.com has been a blast, and we’re proud of the contributions (however small they are) we’ve collectively made to our greater Colorado art & design scene. Cheers… to progress.
And on that note, our space is currently chock full of super great artwork by the likes of Matt Doubek, Markham Maes, Scot Lefavor, Jason Thielke, Ogi, and Joseph Shaeffer. Stop by some time and check it out. Word.

Our good bro, Alex Hanel aka Ihatealex who was on his way to becoming “we” hate Alex due to his lack of correspondence, finally checked in and in fine form. We received this postcard yesterday, rad (the red lettering is all custom cut vinyl!)… considering he must’ve sent it while he was in Bangkok, Thailand and he’s now bouncing around Japan. It’s always good to hear from Hanel. While we’re stoked for him in regards to his travels, we can’t wait to catch up and hear about his east asian adventures. Miss ya bro.

So do we. During an office cleaning session, we decided to line up some of the toys we had laying around. We were pretty happy with the turn out and decided to open up a competition to our readers. Think you have a better toy collection? Send in your pics and well put ‘em up and have a vote (Dee and Dave, you’re out of the running, we know you could crush us.)

We’re startin’ to crank on some new fall artist series gear and we hit our boy, Scot Lefavor up for the first new hoody. We rapped a bit and chose to run with a paint bucket theme, that was it. Lefavor handled the rest in true FAIVER style. We’ll be gettin’ crackin’ on these next week along with a grip of other new J.E. gear. Exciting!!!

Rafa Jenn will be showing an all new body of work entitled “Pin-Ups” in the form of 50 “NEW” drawings on September 14th. We regard Rafa pretty highly around here and we’re honored to have his work adorn our walls. We can’t wait, you can’t either. Trust us. Turntablist SYMMETRY will be on the decks in typical JE fashion, PBR’ll be flowin’, and there’ll be a shit ton of stellar new art. Stop on by and soak up Rafa’s steez, we guarantee you’ll be stoked!

Our good friend Mike Graves is having a show here at the Engine on August 10th. We’re all psyched to check out his new work. If you’ve been to a JoyEngine opening before, you know the deal, if not, we have free drinks, rad art and slamming Djs. We’ll drop some previews as the show gets closer. Details on the flyer.

In case you haven’t noticed we’ve been doing some updates to our litte “JOYstore“… While we love designer art toys, and makin’ new tees, caps, and other affiliated gear we’ve decided to remove them from our online store and focus intently on further developing our online art gallery. All of our gear will be available at JoyEngine World Headquarters, 2037 13th Street, Downtown Boulder, CO, but will no longer be available online. We will occassionally drop some super hot tees, hoodies, and random shwag, but it won’t be all that often. The art gallery however will stay dialed, you can count on it.
The real aim of JoyEngine is to promote the arts, particularly the visual arts, and all those (particularly those in our crew and extended family) artists gettin’ after it. Subsequently, to do both our homies and ourselves justice we’ve simplified things. The real differentiator between JoyEngine and other related shops is our commmittment to our posse, and that means we gotta rep their art right. So, we’re gonna. There’s tons of designer toy stores, and all sorts of arty apparel shops (2 shops you should check out and help support are the Plastic Chapel(toy gurus) & The Fabric Lab(fashion geniuses), so we’re gonna let them do their thing, do our best to help support, and we’re gonna do ours. If we weren’t crazy doin’ client-side design work things might be different, but for now that’s dealio, yo. So, check out the art, it’s fuckin’ fresh and do your part to move creative culture forward. Word.

Fox Network does not like JoyEngine. Today, our myspace account was pillaged by the man. If you happen to be our “friend,” you no doubt know that we send out art forward comments regularly. Most people loved it – some didn’t. Well, every single comment ever sent has now been deleted. We received no notification from myspace.com, so we don’t completely know the status of our account. Regardless, for the time being, our myspace is out of commission. We’ll keep you posted on the situation and we’ll have a commemorative post honoring all the deleted comments soon. Real, real, soon.

In honor of our one year anniversary on May 5th, we cut Lucian “Small BUT Dangerous” Foehr loose this afternoon to illustrate our celebratory anniversary graphic. He handled it to say the least. True to JE x C13 form we kept it flat, vector, ran the gradient, added some alt rock love for JR and all while rockin’ our favorite and totally classic CMYK colorway. Enjoy. We’ll be bringin’ this beeotch to life in the form of tee soon. Word.
NOTE: Lefavor, if you’re reading this you should stop and get back to runnin’ your transfers… just 4.25 days to go buddy. Wahhhhhhhhh!

The JoyEngine team just decided to include an ad in the Boulder Weekly’s annual Best of Boulder (arriving this Thursday). With just the afternoon to put something together, the JE team rallied, came up with a concept, hunted down some resources, shot some photos and got busy in Photoshop… creating a full-page (10” x 12”) color ad.
Enjoy.
The making of…
