MARMALADE AT PIRATE

By: Alex Henry

Matt Doubek and Sam Mobley’s two man exhibition, Marmalade, is currently on display at Pirate, a co-op gallery of over 25 members, located off Navajo Street (3655 Navajo St. Denver CO 80211) in the Highlands neighborhood of Denver. Doubek’s signature collage and painting technique was applied to pieces large and small, growing an already established body of incredible work. Mobley’s creativity and craftsmanship contributed the hallmark of the show, a minimalist vacuum bag formed wood chair.

Saturday’s reception (February 7th, 2008) had many in attendance, with the majority taking advantage of the wine, bread, toasters and assortment of marmalade available, coinciding with the title of the exhibition.

Franchise It – by Matt Doubek

By: Todd Berger

Doubek dug one out of the archives and passed it our way.  Guess it makes sense.  Men with big cocks have always held a certain mystique.  You can see more of Matt’s work at his next show with his pal and fellow collaborator, Sam Mobley at Pirate Gallery this Friday, Jan. 30th.

His newest line features a complete alphabet of fun and quirky mixed medium paintings on recycled wood panels as seen through his peculiar lens. All pieces are priced below $150.00 for that pocket friendly holiday.

Here are a few images from Matt Doubek’s October 4th opening at Charmingwall Gallery in New York City. He even got the opportunity to paint the wall. Again, Matt Doubek goes above and beyond with his creativity and ability to paint! Amazing! A song should be dedicated to him.

INSIDE MATT DOUBEK’S STUDIO

By: Alex Henry

INSIDE THE STUDIO OF ARTIST MATT DOUBEK. Last night I finally made my way over to Matt Doubek’s studio space. An awe inspiring, 360 square foot heated brick space void of plumbing. So what does this painter and collage mastermind do about water and having to go to the bathroom… several five-gallon buckets of water he brings from home and of course the notorious pee bucket. Those familiar with pee buckets and the frigid waters used to clean brushes will appreciate several of Doubek’s stories, one especially stands out where he ended up having to pay close to $150 to take a poop (in an indirect way of course). The stories are best heard from the Minnesota native’s lips, the thick accent makes it that much better, ya knoohhw?

Doubek always has a brew on hand for a guest, so as I enjoyed a drink I made my way through the hundreds of sketches, notes and magazines covering even more sketch, notes and magazines. I found a Playboy Magazine from 1972 in mint condition. Many of Doubek’s resources come from vintage periodicals and dumpster diving. Spend some time with Doubek’s pieces and you’ll most likely find several “boobies” cut from magazines in each of his pieces. As much as I like boobies, I have to say I was more turned-on by the amazing body of work that is being created in Doubek’s studio.

Doubek is preparing close to 50 pieces for his upcoming show at Pirate Gallery. The show will run from the 18th of January to the 1st of February (first friday), where there will be a party for the closing night. These are a few photos of Doubek, his studio, and some pieces to give you a sneak preview of his upcoming show.
