PIRATE GALLERY INVITATIONAL RECAP

By: Josh Holland

SBD and I took a trip to Denver last Friday to check out the Pirate Gallery artist invitational, and support our close ally Ray Young Chu of art superfriends The Yummies. This eclectic group show featured artists employing techniques ranging from metal sculpture to watercolor, and they put together a great mass of work. Our night culminated with late night drinks and some crayon collab action. Good times!

THE YUMMIES Group Show

By: Ray Young Chu

flyer_yummies_pirateinvite.jpg

We will be showing at The Pirate Gallery Invitational in Denver this Friday. The Yummies characters will probably not be present but I will, with a smile and some good stories.

We have a couple new paintings with some older work along with 15 other artists.

It’d be good to connect with you all.

MATTHEW DOUBEK & SAMUEL MOBLEY

By: JoyEngine

Matthew Doubek and Sam Mobely are very close friends. They’re also both great artists. Their most recent collaborative show, entitled, Letters from Our Backyard at Pirate Gallery was a sight for sore eyes. Collaboration doesn’t always come easy. Ultra-creatives tend to hold on to their own aesthetic ideals quite closely. Often times what makes individual artists great hinders their potential to work with others. We can confidently state that this was not nor is the case with Matt and Sam. Their individual works were spot on and their collaborative works were even better. Collabs work best when the parties working together each bring something unique to the table. Matt and Sam did just that. See for yourself.

NOTE: A good majority of the remaining works we’ll be making their way to the Engine very shortly. So if you’d like a closer look, you’ll be able to have one real soon.

DOUBEK TONIGHT AT PIRATE GALLERY

By: Alex Henry

This evening, Pirate Gallery will be having their closing reception for Matt Doubek. Come enjoy over 50 new pieces from the talented artist. Oh, and if a Friday evening with  great art can’t get you out, you should be informed that there will be a keg and several toasters ready to heat-up an ample supply of Pop-Tarts.

INSIDE MATT DOUBEK’S STUDIO

By: Alex Henry

INSIDE THE STUDIO OF ARTIST MATT DOUBEK. Last night I finally made my way over to Matt Doubek’s studio space. An awe inspiring, 360 square foot heated brick space void of plumbing. So what does this painter and collage mastermind do about water and having to go to the bathroom… several five-gallon buckets of water he brings from home and of course the notorious pee bucket. Those familiar with pee buckets and the frigid waters used to clean brushes will appreciate several of Doubek’s stories, one especially stands out where he ended up having to pay close to $150 to take a poop (in an indirect way of course). The stories are best heard from the Minnesota native’s lips, the thick accent makes it that much better, ya knoohhw?

Doubek always has a brew on hand for a guest, so as I enjoyed a drink I made my way through the hundreds of sketches, notes and magazines covering even more sketch, notes and magazines. I found a Playboy Magazine from 1972 in mint condition. Many of Doubek’s resources come from vintage periodicals and dumpster diving. Spend some time with Doubek’s pieces and you’ll most likely find several “boobies” cut from magazines in each of his pieces. As much as I like boobies, I have to say I was more turned-on by the amazing body of work that is being created in Doubek’s studio.

Doubek is preparing close to 50 pieces for his upcoming show at Pirate Gallery. The show will run from the 18th of January to the 1st of February (first friday), where there will be a party for the closing night. These are a few photos of Doubek, his studio, and some pieces to give you a sneak preview of his upcoming show.

CAL DURAN

By: JoyEngine

As we were checking out Matt Doubek’s show at Pirate Gallery we stumbled upon an artist that we were unfamiliar with. Cal Duran does some amazing work with mixed media. It was refreshing to see his installation of paintings, drawings, and sculpture. The time he must have spent on this body of work was intimidating and admirable. Go to Pirate and check it out, get it while it’s hot and still affordable! We are looking forward to seeing what this young up and comer has in store for us in the future.
