UNOFFICIAL DNC EVENTS

By: Mark Siebert

The DNC had a lot to offer above and beyond politics. A lot of parties and concerts took place last week in Denver. On Wednesday I went to the free mid-afternoon Rage Against the Machine show that took place at the Denver Coliseum for Iraq Veterans Against the War. RAGE always puts on a great show but this has to be the best RAGE concerts I have seen to date. After the show the band led thousands of concert-goers in a “march for peace” to the Pepsi Center.

I headed over to the Manifest Hope Art Gallery after RAGE and met Shepard Fairey (who was extremely nice in person). That was really amazing.

Then Wednesday night I checked out the free Public Enemy show at the Boulder Theater. The original line up was in the house and they performed their historic album “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” from start to finish. Flavor Flav was on point.

CRAZY 4 CULT II RECAP

By: Josh Holland

On Friday night Gallery 1988 opened the second annual “Crazy 4 Cult” show, hosted by infamous film director Kevin Smith. The show’s theme centers around a list of films affectionately known as cult classics, and features artists as varied as the films they represented. Some notable participants include Shepard Fairey, Jim Mahfood, Chet Zar, Plasticgod, Reuben Rude, Camilla D’Errico and Shannon Bonatakis. I did not have the pleasure of attending, but the show can be seen online in its entirety HERE.

Smith made sure to snatch up every single piece that featured his film alter ego Silent Bob, hopefully not to look at himself, but to support those artists that have supported his film career all these years… Yup, that’s what I’m going with. Love me some smodcast. Rumor has it that Weird Al will be hosting next year, look for UHF to dominate.

The following are some snippets of my favorite pieces from this show. Enjoy!

MANIFEST HOPE GALLERY CONTEST – DENVER

By: JoyEngine

MoveOn.org Political Action and Obey Giant invite you to show your art at the Democratic National Convention at the Manifest Hope Gallery in Denver!

Art plays a pivotal role in creating cultural momentum. Shepard Fairey’s Obama HOPE poster is a perfect example of a work of art having immediate impact across the country.

MoveOn.org has partnered with Shepard Fairey to create the Manifest Hope Online Gallery Art Contest.

This is your chance to get involved. Submit your artwork themed around Hope, Change, Progress, Unity and Patriotism—the themes that Obama’s campaign brought to public awareness. You can submit any kind of art: painting, sculpture, collage—any 2D or 3D creation that exemplifies the positive themes of Obama’s campaign.

Submission is quick and simple. Just click here to submit images of your original artwork. MoveOn will be accepting submissions from today through 11:59 a.m. EDT on August 18, 2008.

Of the submitted works, up to 30 pieces selected by our judges will be displayed online in a virtual gallery, and 5 pieces will be shown at the Manifest Hope Gallery show, which will run from Sunday, August 24 to Thursday, August 28, 2008 at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. All artwork displayed in the virtual gallery will be auctioned via eBay with all proceeds going to progressive causes.

Grassroots energy is at the core of MoveOn.org. Grassroots energy helped Barack Obama win the primary race. And grassroots energy will help propel Obama to victory in November. Please use your creative ideas to help capture the energy we are experiencing in this campaign season!

Please make sure to read the contest guidelines thoroughly before submitting your work.

Partners of the Manifest Hope Gallery include: MoveOn.org, Upper Playgound, Subliminal Projects, Studio Number One, Evolutionary Media Group, and Obey.

$108,000.00

By: Mark Siebert

Bidding has just closed on Shepard Fairey’s 1 of 3 mixed media stencil collage on cotton rag paper of OBAMA HOPE, 2008. The winning bid is $108,000.00. I guess this goes to show that both Shepard Fairey and Barack Obama continue to gain popularity!

FAIREY DONATES RARE ORIGINAL “HOPE”…

By: JoyEngine

[Los Angeles- July 14, 2008] Shepard Fairey, the contemporary artist whose irreverent works have deconstructed the meaning and methods of propaganda, ironically became the creator of one of the most potent political images in recent history – the OBAMA “HOPE” poster. The image found such immediate resonance with Obama supporters that it became ubiquitous throughout the primary campaign and across the web.

Now, at the request of Russell Simmons, Shepard has donated one of three fine art versions of the poster to the charity auction, Art For Life, an annual event which benefits Simmons’ Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.

This piece is approximately 4 foot x 6 foot in size and is a mixed media stencil collage on cotton rag paper. This “HOPE” may be the only fine art piece of this image available to the public, and is one of only three in existence.

The Art For Life auction ends Tuesday, July 16 at noon. Then the online budding is closed and the highest bidders are invited to bid by phone during the live auction on July 19. Entering the online auction is the only way to enter the live auction. The online auction can be found here.
