‘TOYS’ SHOW RECAP

By: Josh Holland

On Tuesday night Gallery 1988 opened a massive group show aptly titled “Toys” and featured all toy related artwork from a wide range of artists. Some notable participants include Greg “Crayola” Simkins, Kathie Olivas, David Horvath, Camilla D’Errico and Shannon Bonatakis. I did not have the pleasure of attending, but the show can be seen online in its entirety HERE.

Some of my favorite pieces from this show are the customized toy VW busses, done up by heavy hitting artists such as Peekaboo, Reuben Rude, Tokidoki, Cameron Tiede, Jeremyville, Jason Limon, Mark Bodnar and Plasticgod. There’s a video of the Hotwheels exhibit HERE. Awesome stuff!

MAGIC x POOL ‘08

By: Josh Holland

Last week I headed to Vegas for the 2008 Magic Apparel Convention and Pool Convention for a little industry research. I met some great people and saw some really jaw dropping art and design work. Most vendors at the shows (especially Pool) are super protective of their unreleased goods, so documenting most things was impossible. But I managed to get a lot of pics anyway, and here’s the best of them.

HIGHLIGHTS: Pieces from the “Mickey Unbound” show (Greg Simkins+), artist series Mountain Dew’s massive DJ booth (good move for them, I know plenty of artists addicted to their product), meeting Mr. Cartoon and childhood hero Mark “The Hammer” Coleman, computer animated Tokidoki characters and general design overload awesomeness!!!

TOKIDOKI MOOFIA

By: JoyEngine

The Moofia Minions are here. Starting with Mozzarella, Tokidoki has extended the Moofia series with these minis. They come in crazy cute milk cartons and in various flavors, from Latte to Choco. They’re cast in plastic as opposed to the usual vinyl. The picture doesn’t include all the figures, just a few boxes we opened for the display. Damn they’re cute.

Ah yes, the delicious sounds of Super Mario World for all to hear!

“The complete soundtrack to Super Mario World, covered by one man using dozens of instruments. Roughly in game order, faithful to the originals, with some bizarre artistic license thrown around. A private hobby made public.”
