“You have the capacity to resist immediate judgment, to reject a world of prescribed dualities…good and evil, right and wrong, traditional and modern. It is this ability to use our senses, without preconceptions, that opens our lives to direct experience. It allows us to discover the “real thing,” the thing we long to know but that is hidden in a world full of symbols and information. Symbols regenerate, each life cycle bringing us no closer to truth.”
“At tres birds workshop, symbology and stylistic references are absent from our work. Inhabitants of our built forms are encouraged to experience the materiality, the structure, and the resulting light and shadows with their senses wide open. With our clients, we rediscover the real thing. We expose the very essence of materials, stripped of association, allowing those materials to vibrate. The forms that emerge are cast from the land, free from intellectual interference. They are the entities that have dwelled on the land, the light, and the shadows that follow.” – tres birds workshop.
tres brids workshop teamed up with 5280 lasers to laser-etch one seriously large log to serve as a table for a newly designed seating area by Mike Moore and crew at the Burton store in Vail, CO. Hot. For real.
My friend Mike Moore heads up tres birds workshop, a Boulder based architecture and design firm. Mike and his team are perpetually pushing the boundaries of design both conceptually and structurally (guess that’s why we haven’t found time to hang recently…). Few US-based boutique firms exisit within any creative field that are as committed, conscious, seasoned and forward-thinking as tres birds. Earning every right to work with clients like Burton (designing Jon Damiano’s first of its kind retail showroom in Denver leading to the eventual design of Burton’s flagship stores in Osaka, Los Angeles, Irvine, Oakland Chicago, and Vail) and CP+B (designing and building out some of the best features in their Boulder location) certainly wasn’t easy, but Mike and his crew made it happen – the way it should happen – through belief, committment, raw talent, some serious skills, and a little help from their friends.
Mike and his radical thinking are major sources of inspiration to the three of us at our little creative firm. But, at days end… It’s the small things, like receiving videos like the one below (tres birds shot the below video while working on the Freehill studio and garage) that reaffirm that inspirational pole position and load it up with some bonus credibility.
Our good buddy Mike Moore stopped by today to review the new site we’ve been working on for his firm, tres birds workshop. We’re makin’ progress and the site’ll be pretty fresh when it’s complete, nice and clean, and offer up a great canvas to hold all of tres birds new work, which is a lot.
It’s always good to see Mike. He’s one of the most inspirational and insightful people we have the honor of working with. Mr. Moore and his team have been keeping busy to say the least. They’ve been designing all of Burton’s new retail spaces. From Chicago to Osaka to Vail to Los Angeles, if it’s new and says Burton outside and you can buy shit, well then tres birds designed the space. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more on Mike Moore and tres birds workshop cause they’re blazin’ a trail others are sure to follow.
Our close friend and ally Mike Moore over at tres birds workshop has been doing a great deal of retail store design for Burton Snowboards. If you don’t know about tres birds workshop by now, you should take a look. When CP+B moved to town they pulled in Mr. Moore and his team to design and build a number of installations and custom pieces of furniture. The tres birds team has been designing and building out retail environments for Burton all over the place. They’re currently “in progress” on both the Vail store and the Los Angeles store. They redesigned the interior of the Irvine store back in August and their Chicago store opened in September (I visited the Chicago store just after it’s opening and can validate it’s awesomeness).
Very recently Burton’s Osaka store, designed by Japanese architect Nobuo Araki opened at twice the size of their Tokyo store with contributions from the tres birds team. Moore called in our good friend Kristian Kluver at the last minute to whip up some ceiling graphics and complete the airy/floaty feeling the shop aimed at evoking. Kluver created a number of potential concept illustrations, and while the one chosen by Burton was not his personal favorite, we’ve gotta say it’s fuckin’ dope to have a collab happening over in Japan between two of our close friends and one of Japan’s most progressive architects.
