Jeremy Brautman and HUCK GEE – $$$
18.08.08
Legendary toy customizer, Huck Gee has been takin’ some heat as of late over the high prices of his super custom toys. Our pal Jeremy over at Toycyte got down with huck to get the lo-down. Huck’s prices are totally justified, if not low. Customized toys are art, just like a painting, or an inked illustration, or a more traditonal piece of sculpture. Toy sales to some degree are driven by all the wild customizers out there, customizers like Huck. If you can’t afford the best the toy-world has to offer, stick with the off the shelf models. After all, even those are limited editions. Just don’t cry when an artist gets paid what he or she deserves. Read the interview here…

Buyers simply can’t complain about pricing on art. The artist knows what materials/time/gallery fees/etc. factor into their pricing, and nobody else does. The price of $800 as referred to in the article as a “month’s rent” is totally irrelevant because the artist incurred the cost of all materials and blank toys, he spent valuable time experimenting with and executing the finished toys and he’s surely spent time and/or money getting his online presence to the point of instant sellout on expensive custom toys. If they’re sold through anyone but himself he’ll pay a gallery fee of some sort, and let’s not forget that the government takes roughly 30% OFF THE TOP ($240). Clearly these toys are worth the money.
Props to Huck Gee for sticking to his guns and knowing what his services are worth (it turns out he’s low-balling). Anyone criticizing him needs to get a clue.
